The gearbox bolts are usually A4-70 or 80, which are SS316 equivalents, or A2-70, which is SS304 equivalent. Unlike cast iron, gearbox 316SS has greater corrosion resistance, isn't brittle, and isn't susceptible to cracking from falling things. The roughness of cast iron surfaces makes paint adherence problematic on the metallic surface. Figure 19.1 depicts a rusted cast iron gearbox.
